DUAL PERSONALITY

His arrival was marked by the two aspects of valour and endearing loveliness. That he came with his bow alone as support is indicative of the valorous warrior that he is, while his gait proclaimed his endearing loveliness. Sumitra, while giving leave to Lakshmana to accompany Rama to the forest, cautioned him thus: "When your brother walks, be not absorbed in the loveliness of his gait and be lax in your vigil to protect him".

His appearance made it clear that two thoughts were dominating his mind; to live if he secured me and to die if he did not.

The two aspects of saulabhya (easy accessibility) and paratva (supreme lordliness) were discernible in his presence. "In spite of looking at such an endearing form of his, shows his saulabhya, while "I became afraid of his supreme overlordship" reveals his paratva.

On his first meeting with Rama and Lakshmana, Hanuman described them as divine beings in human form. His arrival combined both these aspects. By the expression "with only his bow as support" is shown his human aspect, resorting to a bow like any mortal warrior. The declaration that his eyes were like lotuses proclaims him to be the Supreme Lord with lotus eyes as described in the famous kapyasam text of the Chandogya Upanishad.

Valmiki observes that Rama and Lakshmana walked "with the gait of an elephant and a lion, and with the look of a tiger and a bull". Likewise, the aspects of an elephant and a lion were visible in his gait, and in his looks he resembled a tiger and a bull.
